Tips on how to measure cushions for new foam fillings
Replacement Sofa Cushions
When measuring foam cushions for new foam fillings there are a few things that need to be taken into consideration.
The new foam interior needs to be slightly bigger than your cushion cover. This allows the foam to be slightly compacted and will help it to fill out the cushion cover properly. If the foam interior is too small then your cover will wrinkle when you sit on it. If the new foam fillings are too big you may strain the seams and zip on your cushion cover and your new cushion will look distorted and bulbous.
When replacing foam cushion interiors with new ones, as a general rule you will need to add 1" ( 2.5cm)to the cushion width, and 1" to the cushion length. It is also advisable to add 1" to the depth of the cushion as well. This will ensure that your cushions have a domed appearance rather that it looking too flat.
For Back Foams
Measure in the same way as above for the length and width measurements. Add 2" ( 5cm) to the depth of the cushion border. This will give your back cushions a lovely plump appearance.
Replacing Old Feather Or Fibre Fillings With Foam
If you are replacing feather or fibre cushions with foam interiors it is advisable not to add extra foam to the width or length of the cushion. This will help to prevent your cushions from ending up too big to fit back in their original covers. However you will have to add between 1" ( 2.5cm) and 2" ( 5cm) to the depth of the cushion to fill the cushion cover successfully.
Before ordering your foam double-check your measurements against the space the cushion or cushions will fit into. (ie the arm to arm gap) If you think that the cushions will be miles too big you may have to consider having your cushion covers altered. Most Soft furnishers will be able to do this for you.
What Is Stockinette And Why Is It Important?
Stockinette is a thin stretchy mesh like material that is used to reduce friction between the foam interior and the cushion covering fabric. Foam grips the covers and eventually you will find your covers creasing and creeping round the foam which will make them look untidy.
Another major advantage of stockinette is that it makes inserting your new foam interiors into your covers far easier. Without it you may struggle especially if they are shaped.
Why Choose Dacron As Well As Stockinette?
Dacron is a type of polyester fibre wadding that provides a protective layer between your new foam interiors and your cushion covers. It produces softer lines and helps to fill out the cushion covers nicely. This gives your cushions a lovely plump, luxurious look. The stockinette cover protects the dacron layer and makes it easier to insert your new foam interior into your cushion cover.
