Tips on how to measure cushions for new foam fillings
Replacing Old Feather Or Fibre Fillings With Foam
If you are replacing feather or fibre cushions with foam interiors, it is advisable to :-
- Add 1cm of extra foam to the overall width (side to side) of the cover to allow for a good fit. ie, if your covers width measures 66cm (26") inside "piped" edge to inside "piped" edge (if it does not have a piped edge measure seam to seam) you would need an overall size of foam measuring 67cm (26.5") This will help to fill the cover snugly.
- Add 1cm of extra foam to the overall length (front to back) of the cover to allow for a good fit.
- Add between 1" ( 2.5cm) and 2" ( 5cm) to the depth (top to bottom)of the cushion to fill the cushion cover successfully. This depends on how plump you would like the filling to look once inserted into the cover. As a general rule of thumb if your covers border measures 5" we would recommend a 6" foam.
Before ordering your foam double-check your measurements against the space the cushion or cushions will fit into. (ie the arm to arm gap) Remember once the new foams are inserted into your existing covers they will end up the same size as the cover! So if they fitted before they should fit again, however sometimes the material stretches so we ask you to double check.

- Add 2.5cm (1") of extra foam to the overall length (front to back) of the cover to allow for a good fit.
- Add If You will have to add between 2.5cm (1") and, 4cm (1.5") to the depth of the cushion to fill the cushion cover successfully. For Back Foams
Please contact us if you are considering replacing your back foam cushions, the back foam we use is a REFLEX SUPERSOFT which is an extremely luxurious, soft foam intended solely for this use. However in order for this foam to be fitted corectly, ideally we would need your covers. It is more difficult to get the right measurements especially as majority of back cushions have shaping to them. We are experienced at making sure the measurements are just right.
Dacron is a type of polyester fibre wadding that provides a protective layer between your new foam interior and your cushion cover. It produces softer lines and helps to fill out the cushion cover nicely. This gives your cushion a lovely plump, luxurious look.
Stockinette is a thin stretchy netting like material which is placed over the dacron. It is highly recommended to keep the dacron wrap in place. Another major advantage of stockinette is that it is easier to insert your new foam interior into your cover. Without it you may struggle especially if it is shaped.
If you opt not to have the dacron, a stockinette wrap is the next best option. The stockinette acts to reduce friction between the foam interior and the cushion covering fabric. Without it, the foam would grip the cover and eventually you will find your cover creasing and creeping around the foam which will make it look untidy.
